Reducing access to firearms has helped reduce suicide deaths and improved survival rates of suicide attempts, according to the committee’s report, which includes 117 recommendations that stretch beyond safe firearm storage. In it, the department’s Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review Committee made six recommendations that target safe firearms storage education for troops, better access to gun storage and locks, mandatory registration and storage requirements for personnel living in military family housing.
